If you are a parent you must know one of the hardest things to do is to teach your child how to ride a bike. There is usually a lot of frustration and tears, and sometimes the kids get upset too! However, teaching your child to ride a bike does not have to be this hard. One of the best things you can do to make it easier on your child is to purchase a balance bike.
This is simply a bicycle with adjustable handlebars and seat which has no pedals and crank. There are many different manufacturers and balance bikes can be found made of metal or wood. These bikes are meant to teach children how to focus on balancing while seated on the bike and pushing with their feet. Kids gain confidence quickly on these bikes and soon begin to go faster and pick up their feet to glide for short distances.
So you may be asking “why not just get some training wheels?” This is what most people do because that is the traditional way to teach a child how to ride a bike. However, learning to ride a bike with training wheels can actually be more difficult than you might imagine. When the child first tries to ride they have to concentrate on peddling, steering, and balance. Training wheels are great but kids can still tip over and get hurt. Sometimes the training wheels will give them a false sense of security until they crash. It can then be difficult to get the child back on the bike to try again. Also, training wheels on regular bicycles usually can only be ridden on hard surfaces. This can lead to some bumps and bruises when the inevitable crashes occur.
